British users of Hotmail accounts now have a better chance to get that email address they always wanted. Microsoft is introducing the @hotmail.co.uk address to make it easier to think up a new name and not one of the 187 million hotmail.com addresses already spoken for.
Other countries to get their own Hotmail domains are Germany, France, Italy and Japan.
Microsoft is also announcing that new customers will get up to 250Mb of free storage space on a new account after 30 days. Previously the company had limited to the 250Mb limit to existing customers. Now, on signup, a new account gets 25Mb of storage and the ability to send 10Mb attachments.Once the account has been in existence for 30 days, the limit rises to 250Mb. This still leaves Hotmail behind the 1Gb available to Google’s Gmail users but that service is still only by invitation only.
