новая версия серверной операционной системы семейства NT от Microsoft. Эта версия должна выйти на смену Windows Server 2003 как представитель операционных систем поколения Vista (NT 6.x). Ориентировочная дата выхода — 2008 год.
Первая бета-версия системы стала доступна 27 июля 2005 года. Вторая бета анонсирована на WinHEC 2006 и выпущена 23 мая 2006 года. Подтверждено, что Windows Server «Longhorn» будет поддерживать как 64-разрядную платформу x64, так и 32-разрядную x86. IA-64 будет поддерживаться только в редакции Datacenter Edition, оптимизированной на высокую нагрузку.
На сайте Microsoft стала доступна для скачивания третья бета-версия. Вместе с её появлением сменилось и название операционной системы, которая стала именоваться Windows Server 2008. Об этом сообщил глава Microsoft Билл Гейтс на ежегодной конференции WinHEC.
Интерфейс будет тот же, что и в Windows Server 2003, что и в Windows 2000 Server и т. д. При желании пользователь сможет доустановить необходимые ему элементы интерфейса и сделать его абсолютно идентичным стилю Aero, который имеется в Windows Vista.
